Practical tracking guide

Track chicken egg production without a spreadsheet

A useful egg log is more than a number. Recording daily totals, flock changes and costs over time helps you understand what your birds are producing.

What to record in a daily egg log

Start with the date and total eggs collected. If you keep multiple flocks, record each separately. Short notes about weather, new birds, feed changes or unusual days can help explain later changes.

Look for trends, not one-day surprises

Compare weekly or monthly egg totals rather than drawing conclusions from one low day. Production naturally changes with daylight, age, season, molt and flock composition.

Keep hen and flock history together

A count tells you what happened; hen records, breed details and hatch dates add context. When a bird joins or leaves the flock, that history matters when you compare production across months.

Understand feed costs

Keep feed purchases and egg output together so you can estimate feed cost per dozen. This is a practical measure, not a full accounting of labor, housing or every expense.
