How to calculate chicken feed cost per dozen eggs
Keeping chickens is rewarding, but it's easy to lose track of what each dozen eggs costs. A feed-cost calculation gives you a starting point for understanding your flock's expenses.
The simple calculation
Divide total feed spending for a period by the number of dozens of eggs collected during the same period. For example, spending $48 on feed and collecting 16 dozen eggs works out to $3 in feed per dozen. This is an illustration, not a typical flock cost.
Use the same date range
Compare feed purchases and egg counts over the same weeks or months. A bag bought at the end of the period may last into the next one, so long-term averages are often more useful than a few days of records.
Feed cost is not total egg cost
Bedding, housing, supplies, veterinary care, replacement birds and labor are separate expenses. A feed-cost-per-dozen figure doesn't mean your eggs cost only that amount to produce.
Track flock changes
If you add hens, change feed, or experience a molt, note the change. It may help explain a higher cost per dozen without assuming something is wrong.
Use Eggsy to keep the numbers together
Eggsy for Android combines daily egg logs, feed expenses, production statistics and flock records. You can use its records to review trends and export data when you need a closer look.
